Greek police arrest three over fatal arson attack

Greek police arrested three people over an arson attack that killed the mother of a ruling party parliamentary candidate.

The July 1 attack targeted the apartment building of Aphroditi Nestora, a candidate for New Democracy, in Thessaloniki. Her 72-year-old mother was killed and four others were injured.

Police said the suspects are a 26-year-old woman and two men, aged 29 and 24.

The woman was arrested in Crete. Police said she is linked to the anarchist movement and lives in Athens.

The two men were arrested in Thessaloniki. Police said one of them owned an apartment near Nestora’s building.

Greek media reported that investigators believe two suspects used that apartment before and after the attack.

Gas canister bombs were also placed outside the homes of two other New Democracy officials in Thessaloniki the same day.
