EU says genocide denial has no place in Europe

The European Union said there is no place in Europe for genocide denial, historical revisionism or the glorification of convicted war criminals.

The statement came ahead of the anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, when Bosnian Serb forces killed more than 8,300 Bosniak men and boys in July 1995.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and enlargement commissioner Marta Kos said Srebrenica was one of the darkest chapters in European history.

They called on political leaders in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region to choose responsibility over division and dialogue over confrontation.

This year, the remains of 10 more victims will be buried at the Srebrenica memorial centre.

More than 50 people have been convicted of genocide and war crimes in Srebrenica. Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic and military commander Ratko Mladic were sentenced to life in prison.
