Climate change could cost Albania's farms $900m by 2050

Climate change could cut up to $900 million from Albania's crop production by 2050, according to the National Environment Agency.

The report says floods have already caused about $100 million in crop losses over the past decade in the northern regions of Shkodër and Lezha, making them the hardest-hit farming areas.

The agency warns that more frequent floods, droughts, frost and water shortages are reducing agricultural output and increasing the risk to food production.

The report also raises concerns about heavy pesticide use and says organic farming still covers only a small share of agricultural land. It urges faster action if Albania is to meet the European Union's target of using 25% of farmland for organic agriculture by 2030.

Without stronger adaptation measures, the agency says climate-related damage to agriculture is likely to increase further.
