Italian MP demands answers over missing migrants in Albania

TIRANA, April 29 (TemA) -  An Italian opposition MP demanded clarity after 16 of 41 migrants transferred to Albania disappeared from an Italian-run detention centre with no official explanation.

Cecilia Strada and Rachele Scarpa said after visiting the Gjader Repatriation and Detention Centre that only 25 migrants remained. The facility, managed under a 2023 Italy-Albania agreement, recorded 35 incidents, including self-harm, in the first 13 days, they said.

Strada said records indicated one migrant was returned to Italy, six were released by courts, five were declared unfit for detention, and four repatriated. Rights groups, including Amnesty International Italy, raised concerns over transparency and medical screenings.

Italy has spent around one billion euros on the Albania operation.
