TIRANA, June 10 (TemA) – Albanian lawmakers on Tuesday debated a proposal to amend the labour code to allow Muslim employees up to two hours of leave on Fridays for weekly prayers.
The draft, introduced by opposition MP Lefter Gështenja, also calls for employers to provide prayer spaces in workplaces with more than 50 Muslim staff, and to respect daily prayer times where feasible.
Supporters say the measure affirms religious rights in the workplace. Critics raised concerns over implementation and potential abuse, and pointed to Albania’s constitutionally defined secular status.
“The state must remain neutral on religion,” said Socialist Party MP Milva Ekonomi during committee discussions.
The bill remains under parliamentary review.
