Socialist Party marks its 32nd anniversary

Prime Minister and leader of the ruling party, Edi Rama said on Monday during an activity which marked the 32nd anniversary of the Socialist Party that the SP celebrates "this day with the most spectacular victory of the past 32 years".

"Several weeks ago, Albanians mandated us to govern in 54 municipalities," Rama said.

According to him, "on May 14 we won almost 800 thousand votes, which is the best result we've ever achieved."

The Socialist Party of Albania is a social-democratic party. This political party was founded on 12 June 1991. The SP's predecessor was the Labour Party of Albania (PPSH) formed in 1941. PPSH was the Albanian Communist party under its founder and longtime leader, Enver Hoxha and the only ruling party in the country since the end of the World War II.

In 1991, Fatos Nano, a man from the intelligentsia, was elected the new chairman. Nano helped to reform the old Communist party and made it a member of the Socialist International.

Since 2013, when socialists came back to power under current leader Edi Rama, the SP has won every electoral race.
