Swiss voters will decide on Sunday whether to stop the country’s population from rising above 10 million.
The proposal, pushed by the right-wing Swiss People’s Party, is aimed at cutting immigration and easing pressure on housing, schools, transport and public services.
If the population reaches 9.5 million before 2050, the government would have to tighten rules on family reunification, residence permits and asylum.
If it passes 10 million, Switzerland could be forced to scrap its free movement deal with the EU.
Opponents say that would hurt the economy and put Swiss access to the European single market at risk.
Polls suggest the vote could be close.
