Former Albanian President Ilir Meta Exposed as State Security Spy

April 18, 2024— In a shocking revelation that has sent ripples through Albania's political landscape, former President Ilir Meta has been exposed as a former spy and collaborator with the State Security during the communist era. The scandal came to light following a public disclosure made by the Authority for Information on State Security Files to the Parliament, implicating a high-profile figure with the initials I.M.

The investigation pointed directly to Ilir Meta, who served as the president of Albania and currently leads the Freedom Party. It was subsequently disclosed that the individual who had collaborated with the State Security was registered as Ilir Metaj in the Civil Registry, shedding light on Meta's past involvement.

"CNA.al" obtained a document dated February 6, 1989, revealing that Ilir Metaj received payment of 50 leks from the State Security for services rendered. The document, a decision to withdraw funds from the secret budget for operational interests, outlined Metaj's role as a spy tasked with surveillance activities, including monitoring a restaurant.

Further scrutiny revealed a connection between Meta and Filip Talo, a student who had fled to Greece. It was disclosed that Meta, under the guise of a trusted friend, spied on Talo as a collaborator with the former State Security, while receiving payment for his services.

The document's authenticity has been confirmed by the General Directorate of the Civil Registry, solidifying the claims of Meta's involvement in espionage during his political career. Despite Meta's previous denials, the evidence presented underscores his role as a spy and raises questions about his credibility and trustworthiness as a former head of state.
