North Macedonia textbook mislabels Kosovo

A photo shared on social media has set off a dispute in North Macedonia after a seventh-grade geography textbook labelled Kosovo as “Metohija” and marked it as part of Serbia. The term is used in Serbia and has political and religious meaning.

Political analyst Nafie Selmani posted the image and accused government parties of allowing school materials that undermine Kosovo’s status. Her reaction triggered strong discussion online and in local media.

The textbook, published for the 2025 school year, presents Kosovo according to Serbia’s territorial claims. Kosovo declared independence in 2008 and is recognised by most Western states.
