Montenegro’s Abazović calls for Albania, Serbia to lead Western Balkans

TIRANA, Nov. 17, 2024 – Former Montenegrin Prime Minister Dritan Abazović has called on Albania and Serbia to take the lead in ensuring stability in the Western Balkans, saying their role is critical for the region’s future.

Speaking to Albania’s public broadcaster RTSH, Abazović said the two countries have a unique responsibility in shaping the region’s direction. “Albania and Serbia are the two biggest players here. Either they bring stability, or we risk heading into a cold conflict,” he said. “I see Albania’s role as hugely important, acting as a bridge between different communities.”

Abazović, an ethnic Albanian from Montenegro, also stressed the need for countries in the region to work together on EU integration. “If Montenegro joins the EU without its neighbors, the benefits will be limited. The same goes for Albania, though it’s already moving ahead on its own path,” he said.

With elections approaching in Kosovo and ties between Pristina and Belgrade still frozen, Abazović expressed hope for progress. “Prime Minister Rama and I have tried to bring positions closer, but it’s been tough. I hope the elections bring fresh energy. These countries need to find a way to work together,” he added.

Abazović made the remarks during a visit to Tirana for the Cartoon Biennial, underscoring his ongoing engagement with regional issues.
