Construction accounts for 13.8% of Albania’s economy, highest in Europe

Construction has a larger role in Albania’s economy than in any other European country, according to Eurostat data analysed by Monitor.

The sector generated 13.8% of gross value added in 2024, more than twice the European Union average of 5.5%.

New housing, tourism projects and large urban and coastal developments have made construction one of the main sources of recent economic growth.

But industry accounts for only about 12% of the economy. Its share reaches around 20% to 23% in Serbia, Kosovo, North Macedonia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Technology shows a similar gap. Information and communication generate 2.6% of economic value in Albania, compared with about 10% in Serbia.

Agriculture also remains unusually large, producing about 17% to 18% of economic value, against less than 2% across the EU.

The figures show an economy still heavily dependent on construction, farming and consumer services, while industry and technology remain weaker than in most neighbouring countries.
