U.S. strikes Iran after tanker attacks in Strait of Hormuz

The United States said it launched major strikes on Iran after attacks on three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.

U.S. Central Command said it hit more than 80 targets late Tuesday, including more than 60 small boats operated by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Iranian state media said strikes hit Qeshm Island, Bandar Abbas and Sirik, injuring several people with shrapnel.

The Revolutionary Guard said early Wednesday that it had responded with attacks on U.S. military sites in Bahrain and Kuwait.

The escalation comes less than a month after Tehran and Washington agreed a 14-point memorandum aimed at extending a ceasefire and ending the conflict “on all fronts.”
