US and Iran trade strikes over Strait of Hormuz ship attack

The United States and Iran have traded fresh military strikes after Iranian forces attacked a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz.

The American military said it hit one hundred and forty targets across Iran, including missile and drone sites. Officials said the raid was retaliation for a strike on a Cyprus-flagged vessel that crippled its engine and forced the crew into lifeboats.

In response, Iran declared the shipping lane closed until further notice. Its forces fired missiles and drones at an American air base in Jordan, and at targets in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain.

The clash follows attacks on three commercial tankers earlier in the week. It comes as Iran's new supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, vowed national vengeance for the death of his father in an American and Israeli air strike in February.
