Muslims worldwide begin Ramadan

Muslims around the world have begun observing Ramadan, the holiest month in the Islamic calendar.

During the month, believers fast from dawn until sunset — abstaining from food and drink as an act of worship, reflection and self-discipline.

The start of Ramadan is determined by the sighting of the new moon, meaning the date can vary slightly between countries.

Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. Many Muslims also increase prayer, read the Qur’an and give to charity, with the month often seen as a time of generosity and community.

Ramadan is due to end on 19 March, with Eid al-Fitr expected to be celebrated the following day.
