US-Iran deal leaves nuclear issue open

The United States and Iran have signed an initial peace deal, but the dispute over Tehran’s nuclear programme remains unresolved.

The agreement took effect immediately and includes the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a $300bn reconstruction plan for Iran and a US pledge to end sanctions on Tehran.

President Donald Trump signed the deal in France during the G7 summit, saying it would prevent an economic disaster.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also confirmed the agreement.

The two sides will now hold 60 days of talks on Iran’s nuclear programme.

Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Tehran still does not trust Washington and warned that Iran was ready to return to force if talks fail.
