A protest in central Tirana turned violent late on Saturday when demonstrators marched to a police station where people arrested after Thursday’s parliament protest were believed to be held.
The rally had begun peacefully on Dëshmorët e Kombit Boulevard, near Albania’s main government buildings. Tensions rose after protesters gathered outside the police station and demanded information about the detainees.
Police said some protesters, including masked individuals, attacked the building with stones and other objects, smashed windows and entered the lobby, damaging furniture and equipment.
One police officer was injured in the hand and taken to hospital.
Police used a water cannon and brought in additional officers before the area was brought under control.
Authorities have opened an investigation to identify those involved. Further legal action may follow.
