Lake Shkodra joins UNESCO biosphere network

Lake Shkodra has been added to UNESCO’s global network of biosphere reserves, giving international recognition to one of the Balkans’ important freshwater ecosystems.

The lake, shared by Albania and Montenegro, is known for its biodiversity and ecological value.

Shkodra mayor Benet Beci said the status could help tourism, the local economy and communities living around the lake.

UNESCO’s biosphere network now includes 797 protected areas in 145 countries.

The application for Lake Shkodra was submitted last year, after years of preparation.
