Government to borrow $302m from US for military upgrades

Albania has approved a plan to borrow $302m from the United States to buy and upgrade military equipment.

The money would come from a US programme that helps partner countries pay for defence needs.

Albania’s Finance Ministry would sign the deal with the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency.

The loan comes as NATO countries are being pushed to spend more on defence and improve their armed forces.

The decision took effect immediately, but the deal still needs final approval before the money can be used.
