Former president escorted from prison for father’s funeral

Former Albanian president Ilir Meta has been temporarily escorted from a detention facility in Tirana to attend his father’s funeral.

Meta was taken under special security measures to Çepan, the family’s home village in southern Albania.

His father, Rexhep Meta, died earlier this week.

Meta was arrested in October 2024 and is awaiting trial on corruption-related charges.
