Tirana, September 24, 2024 – Albanian and British military forces are conducting a joint exercise in Albania, dubbed "Austere Wolf – 24," aimed at improving operational readiness and strengthening regional security.
Albania’s Defense Minister, Pirro Vëngu, speaking during the event, said the cooperation showcases the committment of both countries to improving military capacities, infrastructure, and preparedness. The initiative, he noted, is vital for addressing security challenges in the region and strengthening NATO's collective defense.
Highlighting the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Vëngu stressed the need for modern defense systems. "Today's security environment demands robust infrastructure, and Albania has already begun revitalizing its military industry to meet these challenges," he said.
He stressed that cooperation with allies is essential for maintaining stability in Southeast Europe, a region he described as being under threat from destabilizing influences.
“Our strength lies in unity and our commitment to keep hostile actors at bay. This will be achieved by staying firmly aligned with Euro-Atlantic goals,” Vëngu added.
The defense minister also pointed to Albania’s strategic importance, saying the country's logistical role in NATO operations is growing. "The 'VIII Response' corridor not only boosts our military capabilities but also positions Albania as a critical logistical hub for NATO missions," Vëngu said. He referenced Albania’s work with Bulgaria, Italy, and North Macedonia to streamline the movement of NATO troops along this vital corridor.
Vëngu confirmed Albania's commitment to improving infrastructure, citing the ongoing port development in Porto-Romano as crucial for regional military mobility and supply chain stability.
“There’s no room for exercises that don’t reflect reality,” he concluded. “Securing Southeast Europe’s supply chains is essential, and Albania is well-positioned to play a key role in this mission.”
