Albania battles severe weather as snow forces schools to close

TIRANA, January 13, 2025 – Heavy snow and rain have wreaked havoc in Albania, forcing dozens of schools to shut and leaving roads blocked across the country.

The Ministry of Education and Sports confirmed the temporary suspension of lessons in 77 schools, citing unsafe conditions for students and staff. "This decision ensures safety amid the harsh weather," the ministry said, following recommendations from emergency authorities.

Northern and mountainous regions, including Kukës, Dibra, and Bulqiza, are among the hardest hit, with road closures adding to the chaos. Central and southeastern areas have also been affected as the storm shows no signs of easing.

Weather experts from Albania’s Geological Institute and Military Meteorological Service have warned that the snow is likely to continue throughout the day, raising fears of more disruption.

Parents are being urged to monitor updates as the closures are expected to last until further notice. Authorities have assured that missed lessons will be rescheduled in the coming weeks.
