Veliaj’s lawyers slam ‘extreme’ hospital escort

Lawyers for Tirana’s mayor, Erion Veliaj, have accused prison authorities of using “extreme and unjustified” security measures during his recent hospital visit.

Veliaj, who faces four charges from Albania’s Special Prosecution, was taken for a medical check-up on 17 July. According to his legal team, he was escorted by 30 police officers and BKH investigators, with some present inside the examination room — a move they call a breach of medical and human rights protocols.

They also claim Veliaj’s requests for medical care had been repeatedly denied before this visit. The lawyers have formally demanded transparency on the procedures, personnel involved, and the time spent at the hospital.

Veliaj’s wife, Ajola Xoxa, is also under indictment in the same case. His legal team vows to challenge every violation of his rights.
