Basha pledges viable political alternative in next year's general election

Tirana, June 21, 2024 — Lulzim Basha, leader of the Euro-Atlantic Democrats, announced today that his group has yet to decide on forming a new political party. However, he confirmed their intention to challenge a court ruling that recognised former PM Sali Berisha as leader of the main opposition party, the Democratic Party.

Speaking in a televised interview, Basha assured Albanians that they would have a viable alternative in the 2025 elections regardless of the court's decision.

He emphasized the need for an alternative to the current government, criticizing Prime Minister Edi Rama's administration as corrupt. Basha pledged to run in the upcoming elections under the Democratic Party's banner if legal hurdles are resolved, or under a new platform if necessary.

Basha stressed that the debate about Albania's future and governance should remain open and transparent, accusing political rivals of trying to stifle public discourse.

"The events of June 11 are part of a larger effort to deny Albanians a meaningful discussion about their future," Basha asserted.

In conclusion, Basha emphasized the crucial need to provide Albanians with options and to renew their trust in the political process.
