US and Europe fail to agree on Bosnia envoy

Talks in Sarajevo have failed to agree on a successor to Christian Schmidt, the international envoy overseeing Bosnia’s Dayton peace agreement.

Schmidt resigned unexpectedly in May but said consultations would continue.

The United States said it was disappointed that its preferred candidate, Italian diplomat Antonio Zanardi Landi, did not secure consensus.

A State Department spokesperson blamed European indecision and said Washington would review its role in the international presence in Bosnia.

French diplomat René Troccaz has also been proposed, with support from Britain and Germany.

Bosnia remains divided between its Serb and Bosniak-Croat entities under the Dayton system.
