EU warns Greece over money-laundering rules

The European Commission has warned Greece over gaps in the way it has applied EU rules against money laundering.

Brussels said parts of the EU directive on money-laundering offences and penalties had not been properly written into Greek law.

Luxembourg and Sweden have also been notified over the same issue.

The rules are meant to make sure EU countries treat money-laundering cases in a similar way and stop criminal groups from exploiting legal gaps between member states.

Greece now has two months to respond and address the Commission’s concerns.

If Brussels is not satisfied, the case could move to the next stage and may eventually reach the EU Court of Justice.
