Investment rules to change amid resort protests

Albania plans to approve a new investment law this year, as disputes over major coastal tourism projects keep pressure on the government.

Economy Minister Delina Ibrahimaj said the law would update the current strategic investment rules and give investors stronger legal protection.

The move comes amid protests against planned tourism developments, including a disputed project near Zvërnec, close to the protected Vjosa-Narta lagoon.

Ibrahimaj said Albania was facing strong regional competition for tourists and foreign investment.

She said some people were protesting out of genuine concern, but others may be using the disputes for political or financial interests.

The government says it wants to attract investment while protecting the public interest.
