Government seeks power to buy farm products in market crises

The Albanian government wants to be able to buy farm products directly when market disruptions put food supply or local production at risk.

The power is included in a new bill on agricultural markets and unfair trading practices. It would apply during serious economic, health or environmental crises.

The government could also remove products from the market or support temporary cuts in production to balance supply and demand.

The bill would require fruit and vegetable traders to register in a national database and report prices in real time. Traders who refuse could be fined.

This is plainer. The first sentence now says the whole story without “giving itself the power” or “proposed law” drag.
