Two years after his death, Ismail Kadare still defines Albanian literature

Two years after his death, Ismail Kadare remains Albania’s best-known literary voice.

The writer died on 1 July 2024, but his books continue to shape how Albania is seen beyond its borders.

Kadare gave Albanian literature a place in the wider world. He turned the history, fears and myths of a small Balkan country into novels read across languages and cultures.

Born in Gjirokastra, he wrote about power, tyranny, memory, betrayal, freedom and fate. His stories were rooted in Albania, but they spoke to readers far beyond it.

Kadare wrote under dictatorship and later in freedom. He kept literature separate from propaganda and political slogans.

He was often mentioned as a contender for the Nobel Prize in Literature, but his reputation does not depend on a prize. His books continue to be read, translated and studied.

Two years on, Albania no longer has his living voice. But it still has his work.

Kadare remains one of the few Albanian figures through whom the world recognises the country’s cultural identity.
