Venezuela earthquakes kill at least 32

Two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela less than a minute apart, killing at least 32 people and injuring more than 700.

The US Geological Survey recorded a magnitude 7.2 quake followed seconds later by a 7.5 quake in northern Venezuela.

Buildings collapsed in Caracas, where rescue teams searched for people trapped under rubble.

Authorities said at least two buildings fell in Chacao, one of the capital’s main districts.

The main international airport near Caracas was closed after serious damage.

Power cuts, phone outages and damage to fuel supply lines were also reported in parts of the city.

Venezuelan authorities declared a state of emergency and warned people to stay away from damaged buildings because of aftershocks.
