EU official says Albania could follow Montenegro into bloc

EU enlargement commissioner Marta Kos says Montenegro is the most likely next country to join the European Union, with Albania next in line.

Kos spoke during a panel on Ukraine’s reconstruction at a conference in Gdańsk.

She predicted that Montenegro could join the EU before her mandate ends in 2029.

Albania, she added, has made enough progress to start closing negotiation chapters.

Kos said EU enlargement was moving faster than in the past decade, but Europe still needed to speed up the process.

Albania wants to join the European Union by 2030.
