MP found dead inside Finland’s parliament

HELSINKI, Aug 19 – A Finnish MP has been found dead inside parliament in what police are treating as a suicide.

Emergency crews rushed to the building after an alarm at 11:06am. Police said no foul play was suspected and confirmed an investigation into the cause of death is underway.

Prime Minister Petteri Orpo called the news “truly shocking” during a press briefing in Kajaani and led a moment of silence. “One of our colleagues has died in parliament. This saddens us deeply,” he said.

Police cars and medics surrounded the site, but officials stressed no special forces were deployed. Witnesses described the atmosphere inside the chamber as “chilled”.

The incident forced Orpo’s National Coalition Party to suspend its summer meeting. Parliament is currently in recess until Sept. 2.
