France evacuates 141,000 as Spain declares wildfire emergency

France has evacuated about 141,000 people as 32 wildfires burn across the south-west.

President Emmanuel Macron has ordered 1,000 troops to support firefighters. The fires have destroyed about 22,000 hectares, while 40 firefighters were injured near Cap-Ferret.

Spain has declared a national emergency as several major fires burn out of control around Madrid. More than 63,000 people have been evacuated or told to remain indoors.

The European Union is sending seven firefighting aircraft to France and Spain.
