Cities told to move cables underground

Albanian cities have been told to move overhead cables underground to make streets safer and cleaner.

Local Government Minister Ervin Demo said many towns and cities have loose cables, improvised poles and installations that do not meet safety standards.

He said the cables damage the look of public spaces and create risks for residents.

Demo said municipalities should lead the work and prepare stronger projects so they can receive European Union funding.

He said underground cables should be treated as long-term city infrastructure, not only as a cost.

The plan is part of a wider government push to prepare local authorities for European Union standards.
