Berisha rejects caretaker government chosen by draw

Albanian opposition leader Sali Berisha says he supports protesters’ demand for Prime Minister Edi Rama to resign, but rejects their proposal for a caretaker government chosen by draw.

That means selecting the members randomly, rather than through a political agreement or parliamentary vote.

Berisha said any caretaker government must be formed under the constitution and approved by parliament.

He said he backed a non-party government that would lead Albania to new elections, but not one created outside the law.

Protest organisers have said they want to keep political parties out of their movement.

Their demands include Rama’s resignation, a 12-month caretaker government and a two-term limit for future prime ministers.

Berisha said his Democratic Party supports the term limit and is ready to vote for it in parliament.
