Albanian prison amnesty frees hundreds today

More than 500 Albanian prisoners are walking free today as a nationwide penal amnesty takes effect.

Correction facilities began discharging 541 immediately eligible inmates on Wednesday morning.

An additional 800 prisoners will receive reduced sentences under the relief package, while over 170 others will have their terms recalculated.

Authorities confirmed that 609 inmates were excluded from the program for failing to meet strict legal criteria.
