Rights group says Albania court cages violate European law

A human rights organization states that keeping defendants inside glass cages during court hearings in Albania violates European standards.

The group raised concerns after former officials Ilir Meta and Ilir Beqaj were held inside glass enclosures during their trials.

Monitors state the barriers restrict the ability of defendants to communicate confidentially with their defense lawyers.

The group noted that Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj was also placed behind glass, despite sitting next to his lawyers in previous hearings.

The organization warned that courts must only use secure enclosures if a defendant poses a specific security or escape risk.
