Serbia seeks revival of Trump-era Kosovo deal

Serbia’s president has called for the revival of a 2020 U.S.-brokered economic agreement with Kosovo to bypass stalled European Union talks.

President Aleksandar Vucic said returning to the Washington Agreement, signed during Donald Trump’s first term, would be a major achievement. He suggested the White House should refocus on the Balkans once diplomatic efforts with Iran conclude.

The push comes as the EU-led dialogue to normalize relations between Belgrade and Pristina remains blocked.

The 2020 pact bypassed the political dispute over Kosovo’s independence, focusing instead on shared rail, road, and energy infrastructure. Vucic praised Trump’s pragmatic approach, claiming the U.S. president has widespread support in Serbia.

The original deal stopped after an international prosecutor indicted Kosovo’s then-president for war crimes.
