Australia beat Turkey as Switzerland and Brazil draw

Australia opened their World Cup campaign with a 2-0 win over Turkey in Group D.

Nestory Irankunda put Australia ahead in the first half before Connor Metcalfe sealed the win after the break, moving them level with the United States at the top of the group.

Switzerland were held 1-1 by Qatar in Santa Clara after conceding late in a match they had largely controlled.

Breel Embolo gave Switzerland the lead from the penalty spot in the 17th minute, but Qatar struck near the end to claim their first World Cup point.

In Group C, Brazil and Morocco also drew 1-1. Ismael Saibari put Morocco ahead before Vinicius Junior equalised for Brazil.
