Argentina survives Cape Verde scare as Egypt, Colombia advance

Argentina needed extra time to beat Cape Verde 3-2 and reach the World Cup last 16, while Egypt and Colombia also advanced from the final round-of-32 matches.

Lionel Messi put Argentina ahead, but Cape Verde twice fought back and pushed the defending champions deep into extra time before Argentina found the winner.

Egypt beat Australia 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Dallas. Emam Ashour scored for Egypt before a Mohamed Hany own goal brought Australia level.

Colombia beat Ghana 1-0 in Kansas City, with Jhon Arias scoring the only goal after 14 minutes.

Argentina will face Egypt in the round of 16. Colombia will play Switzerland.
