African swine fever is active in 52 communities across seven districts in Serbia, with nearly 28,000 pigs dead or culled since the start of the year, Agriculture Minister Dragan Glamočić said.
Emergency measures are in force in Ruma, Obrenovac, Šabac and parts of Sremska Mitrovica. New cases have also appeared near the Croatian border.
The disease does not infect humans, but it can kill nearly all infected pigs and cause heavy losses for farmers and the meat industry.
Authorities have tightened controls, ordered culls and called for stronger disinfection and movement restrictions to contain the outbreak.
