Kosovo’s population declines according to first census projections

Pristina, May 26, 2024 — The population of Kosovo has declined from 1.8 million to approximately 1.5 million, according to the initial projections from the recently conducted population census. This significant decrease of around 300,000 people reflects the need for further analysis and targeted policies.

The census aimed to provide an accurate snapshot of the country’s demographics, but it faced challenges due to the boycott by the majority of the Serbian population in northern Kosovo. In this region, where the Serbian community predominantly resides, the census was met with resistance. Serbian leaders encouraged their community to boycott the process, citing political tensions and historical grievances. As a result, data collection in northern Kosovo remained incomplete.

Accurate population data is crucial for planning public services, infrastructure development, and resource allocation. However, the incomplete census poses challenges for policymakers in addressing the needs of all communities. Authorities in Kosovo will analyze the preliminary data and work towards a comprehensive understanding of the population dynamics. Efforts to encourage participation and ensure inclusivity in future censuses will be essential.
