Kosovo holds local elections across 38 municipalities

PRISTINA, Oct. 12 (TemA) — Voting began on Sunday across Kosovo as citizens elect mayors and municipal councillors in 38 municipalities, with more than 2 million people eligible to vote.

According to the Central Election Commission, polling stations opened at 07:00 and will close at 19:00. A total of 2,025,105 voters inside Kosovo are registered, along with 43,993 citizens voting by mail from abroad.

Authorities said police, prosecutors, the Election Complaints and Appeals Panel, the Judicial Council and the Independent Media Commission are monitoring the process.

In addition to regular polling stations, 38 centres are open for conditional voting, which is allowed only within the voter’s municipality.

Ninety-three political entities are competing — including 32 political parties, two coalitions, 32 civic initiatives and 27 independent candidates — with 5,624 certified candidates in total.

The list includes 205 candidates for mayor and more than 5,400 for local councils. Over 33,000 voters are casting ballots for the first time.
