European Union foreign ministers are meeting today to settle a standoff over who will lead the peace mission in Bosnia.
The bloc’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, says the talks will focus on finding a successor to the country’s top international envoy, who resigned in May.
The search is currently stuck in a deadlock: the United States is pushing for an Italian diplomat, while several European nations are backing a French candidate. For now, an American diplomat is filling the role temporarily.
The envoy is tasked with upholding the peace deal that ended the war in the nineties. With a final decision expected by tomorrow, the pressure is on to end the dispute and keep Bosnia’s government stable.
