Tirana, August 19, 2024 — Almost half of all households in Albania now own or use at least one vehicle, marking a significant increase from previous years. According to the latest census data, 336,000 out of 722,000 households—44.4%—have a car. This is a notable increase from 2011, when only 24.8% of households in the country reported owning a vehicle.
This trend is confirmed by the General Directorate of Road Transport Services, which reported that new vehicle registrations jumped by 83% in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period last year. More than 50,000 vehicles were registered for the first time between January and June.
The data also shows that Albania's vehicle fleet is getting younger. Currently, 9,040 of the vehicles on the road are from the latest generation, aged between 0 and 3 years old.
In terms of where these new vehicles are coming from, Italy leads with 18.2% of imports, followed by South Korea at 17.4%, and Germany at 17.2%.
This increase in car ownership reflects broader economic changes and the growth of the middle class in Albania, signaling a new phase in the country's development.
