EU moves closer to ending roaming charges for Balkans

The European Union has moved closer to opening talks on ending roaming charges with the Western Balkans.

EU ambassadors have approved the start of negotiations with Albania, Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia.

The Council of the EU is expected to give formal approval on 4 June.

If talks are completed this year, roaming charges between the EU and the region could be removed next year.

The change would allow mobile users to make calls, send messages and use data abroad at domestic prices.

The EU’s “Roam Like at Home” system has applied inside the bloc since 2017.
