Women in Albania remain less likely than men to be in work, despite changes in the country’s economy.
INSTAT figures put the overall employment rate at 58%, while unemployment stands at 8.4%.
But women’s participation in the labour market remains much lower, with many kept out by unpaid care work, family responsibilities and informal jobs, especially in rural areas.
Many women also work unpaid in family farming, meaning their economic contribution is often not fully counted.
The growth of services has opened more jobs for women in cities, but many are seasonal or low-paid.
Experts warn that without stronger social and economic policies, the gender gap will continue to hold back Albania’s development.
