US to withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany

The United States plans to pull 5,000 troops from Germany, amid a row between President Donald Trump and Chancellor Friedrich Merz over the war with Iran.

The Pentagon says the move follows a review of US forces in Europe and will be completed within six to 12 months.

Trump criticised Merz after the German leader said Washington had been “humiliated” by Iranian negotiators.

He also suggested troops could be withdrawn from Italy and Spain, accusing them of not supporting US efforts in the Strait of Hormuz.

The US has more than 36,000 troops in Germany — its largest presence in Europe.
