Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire hit by new strikes

A new ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah was shaken within hours after rescue officials reported fresh Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon.

A US official said the two sides had agreed to stop fighting after Israeli air strikes killed 47 people and Hezbollah killed four Israeli soldiers.

Israel’s military said the ceasefire was in force, but later said it would continue to act against “immediate threats”.

Rescue officials in Nabatieh said at least 12 strikes took place after the ceasefire was due to begin.

The renewed violence threatens Donald Trump’s wider deal to end the war between the US and Iran.

Iran has accused Washington of failing to restrain Israel, while Hezbollah has not yet formally confirmed the ceasefire.
