Five people have died after a shooting at San Diego’s largest Islamic centre, police said.
Officers were called to the mosque in Clairemont after reports of gunfire.
San Diego police chief Scott Wahl said two suspected attackers, aged 17 and 19, were later found dead inside a car near the mosque.
Police said they appeared to have shot themselves.
Three other people were killed in the attack, including a security guard, according to Ahmed Shabaik, the mosque’s president.
President Donald Trump called the shooting “a terrible situation” and said it would be taken very seriously.
Investigators found anti-Islamic messages inside the suspects’ car, the New York Times reported.
A witness told CBS they called police after hearing around 30 gunshots.
Children were seen being escorted from the centre by officers, while a school spokesperson told CNN that pupils and staff were safe.
Authorities also set up a reunification centre for families after the emergency.
