Ex-FBI chief charged over ‘86 47’ post

Former FBI director James Comey has been charged with threatening US President Donald Trump over a social media post.

The image showed seashells arranged as “86 47”. Officials say the phrase can mean “remove” and was a threat against the 47th president.

Comey denies intent and says he did not know the meaning. He deleted the post.

He faces two charges, each carrying up to 10 years in prison.

Some legal experts say the case may be weak and could fall under free speech protections.
